Creating ceramic art is a thrilling process. You spend hours molding clay, refining details, glazing surfaces, and waiting anxiously for the kiln to work its magic. Once your masterpiece is complete, it deserves to stay safe. Whether you are running out of shelf space, heading off to summer camp, or packing up your bedroom for a big move, knowing how to store your pottery correctly is essential. Ceramics are durable against weather but incredibly fragile when they bump into each other. Taking a few simple steps will keep your unique creations from chipping, cracking, or breaking into pieces. Prep Work: Cleaning and Drying
Before you even think about putting your ceramic pieces into boxes, you must make sure they are completely clean and dry. Dust, moisture, and leftover glaze residue can trap oils or cultivate mold over time if sealed away. Wipe down each piece gently with a microfiber cloth. If your pottery has been sitting around collecting dust, wash it with lukewarm water and mild dish soap. Avoid harsh chemicals that could damage delicate glzes. After washing, let your ceramics air-dry completely for at least twenty-four hours. Moisture trapped inside a storage container can damage unglazed sections of the clay body and ruin your hard work. Never let two ceramic pieces touch each other directly in storage. This is the golden rule of pottery care. Lightweight, delicate items should always go on top. Fill every empty space in the box with crumpled paper, packing peanuts, or even old t-shirts. Instead, choose a climate-controlled area like a bedroom closet, under your bed, or on a sturdy shelf in a hallway. Keep your storage containers off the floor if possible to protect them from accidental kicks or unexpected water leaks.
